Planar transformer offers power from 1kW to 3kW

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has unleashed a planar transformer that provides power from 1kW to 3kW in a compact 70mm x 53mm x 22mm size. The Vishay Sfernice PLA51 offers the same power transfer/conversion while flaunting higher efficiency and a lower weight and profile as compared to devices built on traditional winding technology, indicated the company.

The device is optimised for DC/DC power converters, on-board chargers for electric vehicles, UPS, power control cooling units and solar inverters. In these applications, the PLA51's high typical efficiency of > 99 per cent typical reduces losses, while its low profile of 22mm saves space in subassemblies, Vishay noted. In addition, the transformer's reduced weight of 170g is a key parameter for power supplies in avionics applications.

Providing excellent repeatability, the PLA51 features a frequency range of 50kHz to 400kHz and operates over a temperature range from -55°C to 125°C with heatsink dissipation. Offered in full-bridge, half-bridge and forward power supply topologies, the transformer features tapped outputs for fast and easy connection. This RoHS-compliant device is also available in custom designs upon request.

Samples of the PLA51 are available. Production quantities will be available in 4Q16 with lead times of 12 weeks for large orders.
