Gartner Inc. has released a forecast indicating that the global semiconductor capital spending will plunge 4.7 per cent this year to $59.4 billion. This is a complete downturn from the 3.3 per cent growth the market analyst predicted in the previous quarter and is due to sluggish demand for electronic equipment and consequently sluggish demand for ICs.

Gartner said that the growth would return across all capital equipment markets in 2017 and 2018. Despite the overall downturn for capital spending and wafer-level manufacturing equipment the fortunes of different sub sectors will vary.

For example, in 2016 the lithography segment will grow 1.4 per cent, while the etch, clean and planarisation equipment markets in 2016 are expected to decline by 2.9 per cent. The deposition equipment segment will improve slightly in 2016 with negative 3.2 per cent growth.
