Following the meeting, analyst Ross Seymore of Deutsche Bank left unchanged his estimates for Intel's 2016 revenues of $57.4 billion at a 62.2 per cent profit margin and about $9.4 billion in capital equipment spending.

At the meeting, Intel said it would spend up to $10 billion on capex next year, $1.5 billion of it on memory. Analyst Robert Maire of Semiconductor Advisors speculated the memory capex would focus on making 3D NAND flash at Intel's underused fab in Dalian, China.

As for PCs, Maire said in a newsletter that "Intel is correctly taking a conservative view of the PC market projecting flat to down units... [and] doing a very good job of managing a declining business."

"We continue to evolve our organisational structure to better position the company for growth," said Intel's CEO Brian Krzanich in a press statement. "The calibre of leadership and experience Murthy brings to our executive team represents a significant move towards delivering the benefits of our strategy even faster than before," he added.

"Bringing together the formidable talent into this new organisation will enable Intel to accelerate progress in segments already at significant scale and with continued strong prospects for growth," said Renduchintala in the press release.
