A4WP, PMA combine to form AirFuel Alliance

The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA) have merged and rebranded under a new name. The two wireless charging industry groups have re-emerged as AirFuel Alliance.

A4WP and PMA back a loosely-coupled coil architecture called resonant charging but run over two different frequencies. The groups merged in June 2015 and though neither have widely available products, the AirFuel Alliance will support "inductive, resonant and future standards."

AirFuel Alliance will trump multimode systems that operate with close-coupled inductive and resonant charging standards, according to a release. The alliance is also developing technologies that go beyond the use of magnetics as part of PMA's uncoupled working group.

IHS expects that 20-30 per cent of the wireless charging receivers shipped next year will be dual mode. While it's possible that multiple standards could cause fragmentation among consumers and technology developers, an IHS analyst said the difference may not matter.

All three of the technologies involved are fundamentally similar because each is essentially a resonant wireless charging technology, David Green, research manager for power supplies and wireless power at IHS, previously stated.

AirFuel will have 195 member companies and "after a suitable grace period," certified products will carry the AirFuel name and logo. In October, the alliance hosted the world's first joint inductive and resonant plugfest, where 14 companies tested over 40 receivers and transmitters to gauge compliance and commercial acceptance.
