The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) World Congress highlighted the latest developments in driverless vehicles, where participants got the chance to ride them and talk about the implications of such innovations. They also saw first-hand the technology building blocks that enable the future of connected, electric and autonomous vehicles.

In the following pages, EE Times samples some of the highlights of the World Congress, including mapping, vehicle-to-infrastructure technologies, human-machine interfaces and electric/hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

Electric bike helped by hydrogen fuel cells

The French fuel-cell company, Pragma Industries, showed off an electric bicycle that uses on-board hydrogen fuel cells as a "range" extender. "Fuel cells extend the electric battery by four times," said Christoph Bruniau, Pragma sales manager, allowing the electric bike to run more than 100km. Meanwhile, "you can fill in the hydrogen tank in three seconds—a lot quicker than charging an EV battery," he added.

The recent regulatory changes in France have made it easier to support alternative energy, said Bruniau. Pragma is banking on hydrogen and increasing the number of hydrogen fuel-cell stations in France.

Hydrogen fuel cells haven't been an easy sell, "largely because of people's psychological fear that it might be dangerous," he noted. But by making it more widely available through electric bikes that can be used as tourist rentals or bike-sharing programmes, Bruniau anticipates France riding into the hydrogen future.
