Broadcom Corp. has revealed that D-Smart, a digital broadcast operator in Turkey, has begun volume production of the next-generation digital channel stacker based on Broadcom's low-power satellite Out Door Unit (ODU) chip. The BCM4554 targets consumer demand for satellite services by reducing deployment costs, enabling operators to offer additional service offerings.

Operators face many challenges when implementing new set-top boxes (STBs) with multiple tuners, additional room installations and multi-dwelling installations. The BCM4554 adds support for up to 32 resident STBs on a single coaxial cable within a multiple dwelling unit, enabling operators to deliver additional services to more subscribers without requiring new satellite dish installations. These offerings also enable operators such as D-Smart to improve services such as faster channel changing by assigning more channels to a single STB.

D-Smart's digital channel stacker employs 64 adjustable filters, accepts input from a standard Quatrro LNB and has the ability to reconfigure all input and output parameters dynamically over the air. The latest design can be installed seamlessly to an existing multi-switch environment and can stack channels from 250MHz to 2350MHz. STBs based on Broadcom's BCM7362 and BCM45204+ BCM7250 have been developed with wideband and full-band capture (FBC) features to work with this digital channel stacker solution.

Broadcom's BCM4554 claims to offer a higher level of integration while consuming less power than previous generation chipsets. It also enables direct sampling of low-noise block (LNB) outputs across worldwide ODU satellite markets. The simplified design of Broadcom's ODU chipset allows 32 DVB-S2 channels to be stacked on a single coaxial cable to service any STB in a home, simplifying and reducing satellite operator installation costs.

Broadcom's BCM4554, BCM7362, BCM45204 and BCM7250 are all in production.
