Indian's wearable system bags 2nd place in global challenge

The wearable requires installation of software, which is available for several OS—PC 64bit, Linux and Android. A Wi-Fi access point is needed, which can be provided in-field by a phone set to the tethering mode. This enables the hardware to communicate with the app.

Once set up, the chest strap measures heart rate using AD8232, body temperature using ADT7320 and chest impact force using the ADXL375.

If the sub-GHz transceiver in the strap is connected, then it also receives the helmet impact data from helmet module. The strap records raw sensor data to a micro-SD card at 200Hz sampling rate, processes it and sends it to the remote GUI app. The app allows users to set up the alert thresholds for each of the four measured parameters.

For the helmet module, Butani used an MSP430 microcontroller, an impact sensor (ADXL377) and a sub-GHz transceiver (to communicate with the chest strap). Watch the video introduction below from Butani and head over to his blog post to get the details.
