Socionext Inc. has announced that its ultra high-speed digital-to-analogue (DAC) and analogue-to-digital (ADC) converters have been used in a communications field trial that achieved 38.4Tb/s. The field trial took place over a 762km length fibre optic link from Lyon to Marseille and back to Lyon that is part of the Orange optical network.

Socionext converters featuring sample rates of up to 92Gs/s and high analogue bandwidth were used within coherent receivers and transmitters for the record-breaking data communications.

A team comprising Orange, Coriant, Ekinops and Keopsys successfully demonstrated the highest ever C-band transmission capacity using 24 x 1Tbps/DP-16 QAM, 32 x 1Tbps /DP-32 QAM and 32 x 1.2Tbps/DP-64 QAM modulation formats in a 'live' networking environment.

A record-setting transmission travelled more than twice the distance of any previous field records for 32QAM, and was the first ever regional transmission for 64QAM.

The DAC and ADC were designed and developed by Socionext's network SoC business unit using 28nm CMOS technology. The analogue bandwidth of 20GHz makes scalable architectures for multiple wavelengths and high modulation formats on a single device possible.

"Having already supported the launch of the leading 100Gb, 200Gb and 400Gb technology we are confident that highly power efficient, economic single-chip terabit systems are also within reach," said Manfred Mettendorff, senior director with Socionext Europe.
