Apple has announced that the HomeKit, a framework in iOS for communicating with and controlling connected accessories in a user's home, is due for release next month. The launch would come sooner than some had been expecting, enabling Apple devices to dip into the Internet of Things (IoT) and home automation.

However, Fortune has reported that a number of issues, such as the platform's code size and a problem with lighting control, would likely delay the launch, at least for some products. Nonetheless, according to the Wall Street Journal, an Apple spokesperson said, "We already have dozens of partners who have committed to bringing HomeKit accessories to market and we're looking forward to the first ones coming next month."

The HomeKit software development platform was originally unveiled at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference event last year, and is designed to simplify home automation by allowing Apple devices to control connected home appliances. An actual release date for the system had not been announced, but many manufacturers have been readying HomeKit-enabled products.

According to reports, the platform will let consumers control HomeKit-compliant appliances and products in their home using Siri speech recognition or notification screens on their Apple devices. It uses a standard "common protocol" to allow secure communication among products in the home, such as lighting, music, thermostats and garage doors.
