TI unveils Fly-Buck converter for high-power apps

The newest Fly-Buck converter LM5160A from Texas Instruments is the industry's first 65V synchronous step-down converter, ideal for industrial, smart grid and automotive applications. It improves power density and targets applications with higher power needs such as three-phase AC motor drives, programmable logic controllers, smart metering, renewable energy and many others.

TI's LM5160A provides up to 15W isolated bias without needing an opto-coupler. Supporting 4.5V to 65V, it allows efficient operation in harsh transient condition without using input clamp circuits. Its constant on-time control feature provides transient responses, resulting in lower component counts. The device can also reduce in-rush currents when powering up into heavy loads or large capacitance. Its internal 1 per cent voltage reference and VOUT error correction also improves accuracy across line, load and temperature.

The Fly-Buck converter can generate positive and negative bias supply rails in non-isolated designs while minimising solution and simplifying the design compared to traditional flyback solutions. It can be used with the award-winning Webench tools, which are online tools that enable end-to-end circuit design, simulation and optimisation for footprint, price and efficiency, to facilitate making high-power DC/DC designs.

The LM5160A is available at $1.80 in 1,000-unit quantities.
