Artesyn Embedded Technologies has unveiled the Centellis OCP platform, its first high performance integrated computing system inspired by Open Compute Project (OCP) standards. The platform is geared to help communication service providers minimise capital and operating expense associated with running their networks by leveraging open standard and open source hardware and software, and taking advantage of virtualisation and cloud technologies.

The Centellis OCP platform is a rack solution that integrates servers, storage and top-of-rack switches, and offers improvements in density, availability, flexibility, scalability, serviceability, manageability and ease of deployment versus traditional rack servers, stated Artesyn.

The platform is designed for the development and deployment of network functions virtualisation (NFV) applications orchestrated by software-defined networking (SDN). It is compatible with Artesyn's Centellis virtualisation platform (VP), which is based on a field-proven software framework for NFV. This gives service providers a common application deployment software platform, which is independent of the hardware architecture and can support the scaling of virtual network functions (VNFs) from the edge to the core of carrier networks.

The Centellis VP software framework enables use of off-the-shelf VNFs for true NFV implementations. It enables service providers to run multiple virtualised applications such as firewall, DPI, security, or session border controller on a single hardware platform saving both capital expense and operating expense by eliminating the need for multiple application-specific hardware platforms. A CPU tray (shelf) with four dual-processor server sleds (nodes) in 2OU allows quick and easy scalability, with Centellis VP supporting seamless upgrade to next generation processor technology with no application porting, Artesyn stated.

In addition, the platform touts FCC and UL regulatory compliance that ensures the OCP-inspired equipment can be co-located in existing data centres. It is also highly serviceable with tool-less, front-aisle access that ensures efficient maintenance. The platform also features a Broadcom Trident II-based switching with copper or fibre interconnect that enables the rack to be configured for the application.
