ARM, Green Hills Software team up to elevate car performance

ARM and Green Hills Software have developed what they describe as an optimised compiler for the ARM Cortex-R5 processor that delivers record-setting automotive performance. According to the companies, the collaboration will allow the Cortex-R5 processor to cost-effectively meet the needs of the most challenging automotive applications more than any other MCU solution in the market.

EEMBC Labs have certified the Green Hills compiler, version 2015.1 as having achieved a performance score of 1.01EEMBC Automarks/MHz on the Cortex-R5 automotive MCUs from Spansion. This represents a 30 per cent increase on previous performance scores.

The Green Hills toolchain has a strong functional safety pedigree, having received certificates by accredited independent agencies TUV Nord and Exida at the highest levels of automotive and industrial functional safety, including ISO 26262 ASIL D and IEC 61508 SIL4. This combined level of certification and performance will enable the Cortex-R5 to deliver performance, safety and cost advantages to automotive systems developers as it eliminates the need for custom MCU architectures.

The Spansion Traveo family of Cortex-R5 based automotive MCUs builds upon the highly successful Cortex-R4 based FCR4 family, providing scalability, real-time processing and high-performance in applications where safety is paramount, indicated the companies.

"An Automark score of 192 for a cost-effective automotive grade MCU at this price point sets a new bar for affordable MCUs in body, driver information and powertrain applications," said Takeshi Fuse, SVP, automotive MCUs, Spansion. "Combined with the recent announcement from ARM of a comprehensive safety package for the Cortex-R5 processor for ISO 26262 and IEC 61058 applications, we expect a further boost to the growing momentum of Cortex-R5 and the Spansion Traveo family in automotive and industrial safety products."

Building upon the wide adoption of the Cortex-R processor family in automotive and industrial applications, there have been a number of recent new products based on the Cortex-R5 processor. The Cortex-R5 claims to provide advanced fault management features and a comprehensive safety package for a range of ISO and IEC standards. The unrivalled choice of MCU suppliers and the widest ecosystem offer industrial and automotive OEMs and tier one suppliers assurance of supply.
