Software is key to Nvidia's game plan. One analyst implied the company has transformed from a component supplier to more of a platform-based business. Ten years ago, Nvidia was 100 per cent PC OEMs, responded Huang. "Now we're substantially less than 20 per cent. And so the company has been transitioning to this new model with our own platforms, largely software, and they serve four vertical markets." Huang added that "value-added, highly differentiated platforms are really growing nicely, and it's more than making up for the decline of our PC OEM business, which, as a result, our margins also increase."

More success

During the quarter Nvidia introduced Tesla K80 Dual-GPU server accelerator. Tesla's revenue was several hundred million dollars, nearly doubling YoY.

Also positive was the VMware and Citrix acquisitions, which helped Nvidia increase the number of trials of its Grid up from 400 same time last year to into the thousands now. "With VMware's integration, we're now able to engage probably some 80 per cent of the world's enterprises." Huang said. "Just about anybody who has virtualised their enterprise had done so with VMware's technology."

In September, Nvidia filed patent infringement suits against Qualcomm and Samsung. "Protecting our IP is extremely important to our company. We're in discussions. Of course, the most public discussion is the one with Samsung and Qualcomm, and we're looking forward to some of the developments that will be happening in just a few more months," added Huang.

Nvidia plans to continue advancing with the node technology; Tegra X1 is its first 20nm chip. Huang also expressed happiness with TSMC's FinFET process.

The company said it returned $1 billion to shareholders in fiscal year 2015, from dividends and stock buybacks.
