Ethernet projects to transform business, data centres

Electrically, the group is considering proposals on either NRZ or PAM-4 signalling for chip-to-chip or chip-to-modulation applications. Optically, multiple proposals were submitted for single-mode fibre reaches of 500m, 2km and 10km. These schemes leverage NRZ, PAM-4, or DMT signalling, based on either 4 or 8 optical lambdas, running at effective lane rates of either 50Gbit/s or 100Gbit/s. Given the fundamental implications of the choices, these proposals need to be thoroughly examined before a decision is made.

At this point, it is not clear what the year 2015 will hold for Ethernet. Last year's Ethernet Alliance Tech Forum raised ideas for 50GbE and 200GbE. Further work is needed to understand the applications that might need such rates.

What else the year holds for Ethernet's continuing evolution remains to be seen. After all, I'm reading the same book right along with you. The only thing I know for sure is that this is not the same Ethernet we read about 10 chapters ago.
