ABB, a Swiss power and automation group, has subsumed Spirit IT, a Netherlands-based technology provider that develops and sells flow computers, SCADA systems and solutions for the verifiable transfer of related data. The acquisition by ABB enables the company to extend its line-up of measurement products.

Spirit IT has a focus on solutions for flow measurement and monitoring used in the gas and oil industry. The flow computers and software applications from that company enable higher accuracy and improved control for automation solutions of rigs as well as of the associated transport and data transmission.

The employees of Spirit IT will be taken over by ABB's global measurement and analytics business, which is associated to ABB's process automation division. The acquisition a completed in 4Q14.

"This move enables us to expand our measurement product spectrum offering through Spirit IT's products," explained Ferdinand Finken, business development manager at ABB. "Spirit IT's products complements our spectrum for gas measurement and automation by solutions for measuring the flow of liquids." Finken added that this combined product spectrum enables ABB to tap new additional growth markets in the oil and gas industry.
