Microsemi Corp. has joined forces with STMicroelectronics in developing an electric vehicle (EV) car charger solution using Microsemi's power line communication (PLC) line driver. The module for EV supply equipment (MEVSE) featuring vehicle-to-grid (V2G) communication and support for various network and application protocols from Tatung, uses the Le87501 PLC line driver and the ST2100 STreamPlug SoC from ST, along with a proprietary state machine, event-driven-(SMED) based digital power controller and is supported by the OpenV2G software stack, detailed the companies.

The Microsemi Le87501 PLC drivers are based on Microsemi's proprietary high-speed, high-voltage bipolar process technology that enables significant performance and cost savings over similar technologies in the market, stated the company. The devices have also been selected by ST for reference designs for its recently announced ST2100 STreamPlug SoC products used in applications where high integration levels and computation performance are required such as consumer home area networks (HANs), industrial and smart-grid applications.

This is the first collaboration between ST and Microsemi targeting IoT. The companies are enabling additional capabilities with the use of the Microsemi Timberwolf audio processors for command and control as well as audio sensing. The Timberwolf DSP platform enables Microsemi to leverage its extensive expertise and leadership in voice communications to bridge into novel and emerging hands-free applications that require clear speech, free of noise and echo.

Touted by the company as the world's first intelligent-gateway SoC, ST's ST2100 STreamPlug combines a high-performance processing subsystem with PLC, security and peripheral features to support hybrid networks using popular wired and wireless standards including HomePlug AV and HomePlug Green PHY. The STreamPlug SoC also integrates a PLC modem and analogue front end.

The Le87501 is a single channel line driver designed to work in HomePlug Alliance HPAV2 systems. When enabled, the operation can be set to full, 90 per cent or 80 per cent power. The Le87501 claims to deliver superior performance and features a standby state that forces the driver into a long-term sleep mode.

Features of the driver include small 16-pin, 4mm x 4mm QFN package, low-power operation, class AB operation and enable/disable control. In addition, the RoHS-compliant device is capable of driving line impedance from 12Ω to 100Ω through a proper transformer and supports operation to 86MHz.

The STreamPlug ST2100 device is ST's broadband PLC solution, based on the powerful ARM926EJ-S processor (up to 333MHz), widely used in applications where high computation performance is required, such as consumer HAN, industrial and smart grid applications.

In addition, the STreamPlug ST2100 has a memory management unit (MMU) that allows virtual memory management, making the system compliant with the Linux operating system. It also offers 16KB of data cache, 32KB of instruction cache, JTAG and Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) for debug operations.
