Solar-energy hotspot India will house a 20MW power plant in Navi Mumbai. But unlike existing installations, the solar project will be erected at Morbe Dam on Dhavari river.

Rays Power Experts landed the ₹162 crore project, which was awarded by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corp.

The company said that the solar project is the first of its kind here, and expected to be completed by March 31, 2015.

Setting up the panels over the expanse of the dam barrier will be an engineering feat, with Morbe gravity dam having soil-covered slopes, Rahul Gupta, director of Ray Power told IANS.

Gupta explained that great care must be taken so construction will not damage the wall, which holds about 18,075km3 of water. Other considerations include ensuring that salty water will not damage the solar panels, as well as easy future maintenance.

Rays Power claims to be the third largest solar power developer here in terms of megawatts executed. Established in 2009, it has currently raked in ₹500 crore, with a goal to increase this figure twofold by the end of the fiscal year.

In September, the company announced plans to build a 50MW solar power generation park in Andhra Pradesh, saying the project will be completed in six months.

Gupta said that Rays Power has set its eyes on independent solar power parks, intending to build similar solar parks in other parts of the country.
