MEN Micro Inc., a provider of embedded computing and I/O solutions for mission-critical industrial, mobile and harsh environment applications, has included a couple of scalable versions from its line of maintenance-free, rugged box computers. Powered by the 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor family, the computers claim to provide high performance for specific data handling needs.

The BL70S, designed for storage applications such as video recorders or content servers, features a 4-port Gb Ethernet switch with Power over Ethernet (PoE), as well as an additional 1Gb Ethernet uplink, totalling five interfaces on the front panel. Two external, hot-pluggable HDD/SSD shuttles support RAID 0/1 capabilities for fast audio or video transfer, stated the company.

BL70S, BL70W

The BL70W promises to offer exceptional wireless computing, whether used alone or connected to a display computer. By incorporating four PCI Express Mini Card slots, each with a dual SIM card, the box PC supports a full range of wireless interfaces including GSM (2G), UMTS (3G), LTE (4G) and WLAN. Also offering a GNSS interface that supports GPS and GLONASS, the BL70W ensures reliable wireless communication across virtually any network. This is especially useful in transportation environments such as trains, vehicles, airplanes and portable machines.

While the box PCs come standard with an Intel Core i7-3517UE CPU running at 1.7GHz, other single, dual or quad processors from the 3rd generation Core i7 family can be used, making the computers extremely scalable.

Each box can be equipped with up to 16GB of soldered DDR3 DRAM, complete with ECC as well as a multitude of I/O options. Each also offers a microSD card and mSATA slot for added storage capacities. The fanless computers operate from -40°C to 85°C, using specialised aluminum fins that facilitate conduction cooling.

The integrated S2 wide-range power supply with 24VDC and 36VDC nominal input voltage (10-50.4 V) and a power consumption of 30W is developed in compliance with EN 50155 (railway) and ISO 7637-2 (E-mark for automotive).

MEN Micro's flexible box PC concept ensures easy, cost-effective configuration of interfaces independent of the processor board. The BL70S (storage) specifications include five GbE interfaces: 1Gb Ethernet uplink and 4-port Gb Ethernet switch with PoE, one PCI Express MiniCard slot with two SIM for wireless interfaces, one DisplayPort (2560 x 1600 resolution) and two USB 2.0 ports, and two slots for legacy serial I/O: IBIS, RS232, RS485 or RS422.

The BL70W (wireless) features four PCI Express Mini Card slots with dual SIM for superior wireless connectivity: GSM, UMTS, LTE and WLAN; a GPS controller; two Gb Ethernet, two USB 2.0 and two DisplayPort interfaces; and three slots for legacy serial I/O: IBIS, RS232, RS485, RS422 or CAN.

Pricing is dependent upon configuration. Delivery is six to eight weeks ARO.
