Other enhancements

Besides enhancing cloud-based services, Intel claims the new Xeon E5 v3 processors will enhance data analytics, high-performance computing (HPC), telecommunications, and backend processing for the Internet of Things.

New cache monitoring features will help orchestration tools to make it easier to balance workloads for enhanced overall throughput for different job mixes. According to Intel, the cache monitoring tools will more efficiently monitor hogging of cache resources by particular jobs in multi-tenant cloud environments to smooth out performance efficiency.

Under the hood, the Xeon E5-2600 v3 family will use Advanced Vector extensions 2 (AVX2), which doubles the width—to 256—of integer vector instruction for up to 1.9X performance gains.

The third-generation Xeon E5-2600 also supports up to 70 per cent more virtual machines per server than the second generation. The company also claims 1.4X memory-bandwidth improvement supported by DDR4.

In addition to the Haswell Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors, Intel introduced a new Communications Chipset 89xx featuring easy pairing with Intel's Quick Assist Technology to improve security and consolidate communications workloads. The new Ethernet Controller XL710 with both 10Gbit and 40Gbit channels provides twice the bandwidth of the previous generation at half the power, Intel claims.

Original equipment manufacturers already committed to the new Xeon E5 include Bull, Cray, Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, HP, Huawei, IBM, Inspur, Lenovo, NEC, Oracle, Quanta, Radisys, SGI, Sugon, and Supermicro.

New server boards for the Xeon E5-2600 v3 family include the Server Board S2600WT Family for the enterprise, midsized businesses, and cloud services; the Server Board S2600KP family in a two-socket half-width, eight DIMM 2U rack four-node chassis for HPC and big data; and the Server Board S2600CW family in a two-socket rack for purpose-built appliance, storage, and cloud services.
