Two of the big names in Silicon Valley are lending each other their tech strengths in an exclusive partnership to bring IBM's big data and analytics capabilities to Apple's smartphones and tablets.

The agreement, called IBM MobileFirst for iOS, will facilitate from-the-ground-up development of industry-specific enterprise applications for iPhone and iPad. This opens up the enterprise market for the mobile iOS devices, which Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed are already being utilised in over 90 per cent of leading businesses today.

"For the first time ever we're putting IBM's renowned big data analytics at iOS users' fingertips," said Cook.

The IBM MobileFirst Platform for iOS will deliver the services required for an end-to-end enterprise capability—from analytics, workflow and cloud storage, to fleet-scale device management, security and integration. It will feature enhanced mobile management including a private app catalogue, data and transaction security services, and productivity suite. In addition to on-premise software solutions, all these services will be available on Bluemix—IBM's development platform on the IBM Cloud Marketplace.

Apple and IBM's shared vision for this partnership is to put in the hands of business professionals the unique capabilities of iPads and iPhones in order to help them address issues or opportunities in areas including retail, healthcare, banking, travel and transportation, telecommunications and insurance.

"Mobility—combined with the phenomena of data and cloud—is transforming business and our industry in historic ways, allowing people to re-imagine work, industries and professions," said Ginni Rometty, IBM Chairman, President and CEO.

Aside from building apps, the agreement also decrees the provision of mobile service and support. This will facilitate the creation of a dedicated AppleCare service for enterprise, in addition to the availability of a 24/7 assistance through Apple's customer support group.

The apps are expected to become available starting September and into 2015, with IBM set to sell iPhones and iPads carrying the industry-specific solutions to business clients worldwide.
