There are flexible displays that can rolled up into a scroll, and transparent ones that allow viewing from either the front or the back of the display. These things have never been remote from the truth. Not now especially since LG Display revealed an 18-inch transparent, flexible OLED panel that can be bent to take the shape of a thin cylinder with a radius of 3cm—and without botching up the function of the display.

The panel has a high-definition class resolution of 1200px by 810px with almost 1 million mega-pixels. Its curvature radius is 30R. With this achievement, the South Korean display maker believes that it can bring rollable TV sets of more than 50 inch to the market soon.

"We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 per cent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market," said In-Byung Kang, senior VP and head of the R&D Centre at LG Display.

LG Display used polyimide film for the flexible panel. In addition to the material's high thermal and oxidative stability, polyimide is known for possessing excellent electrical and physical properties. They proved better than conventional plastics as the backplane of the panel to achieve the maximum curvature radius. It also worked to reduce the thickness of the panel, further improving flexibility.

Meanwhile, transparent OLED panel boasts 30 per cent transmittance, for which the firm adopted its transparent pixel design technology. Using circuit devices and film components to a level of 2 per cent lowered the haze of the panel. This approach, according to LG Display, transmittance of the transparent display overall, which only goes around 10 per cent with existing transparent LCD panels.

Portability aside, it is unclear how the technology would add value to TV sets, tablets, or handsets in terms of usefulness and durability.
