Keywords:Panasonic  Sony  Japan Display  OLED  joint venture

Japan Display Inc., a major manufacturer of LCDs for smartphones and tablets, has been mulling about setting up a joint venture with Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. to develop organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

The new company is likely to mostly-owned by the Innovation Network Corp. of Japan, a government-backed fund that formed Japan Display from loss-making panel businesses at Sony, Hitachi Ltd and Toshiba Corp.

At the end of 2013, Panasonic and Sony disbanded a joint project to develop OLED displays for TVs but continued separate development efforts regarding the technology. Japan Display is presently setting up a test line to manufacture OLED panels at a factory in Northwestern Japan.

The joint venture is expected to see Sony, Panasonic and Japan Display each owning a portion of the new OLED company and would send engineers to work on the technology.

An agreement is expected to be reached as early as June 2014, but several issues still remain unresolved.
