TI sees opportunity in India's 2-wheeler auto segment

"Analogue ICs have great opportunity in India as the automotive industry – both four wheeler and two wheeler segments need analogue solutions. Specifically, in India we find opportunity in the two wheeler segment, wherein analogue IC are used to design electronics such as, cluster/speed display, CDI and Body control modules, said Aditya Ambardar, Business Development Manager – HVAL (Automotive), Texas Instruments (India) Pvt. Ltd. In an interview with EE Times India, Ambardar talks about the opportunities the company sees in the Indian automotive sector.

EE Times India: What are the trends in the analogue IC market globally as well in India? Also, tell us about the challenges associated with these trends?

Aditya Ambardar: We are witnessing the trend of electronics moving towards a smarter, safer, greener, healthier and more enjoyable world. For the automotive sector, there is significant market growth for safety specific ICs by the OEMs. Also, the highest demand for ICs is to address power requirements in a vehicle for example—power train. India has also been following the similar demand trajectory. Here the demand is also for semiconductors in body electronics and driver infosystems. In addition, globally and in India, greener components are becoming the need of the day viz, those ICs that operate with lowest power consumption or low quiescent current. In line with this trend, TI has been focussing on building power components that are much greener, with lower quiescent current and deliver better performance.

Where do analogue components stand in the fully digital world?As a foundational element in nearly every digital application, analogue chips convert "real-world" signals, such as voice, sound, pressure, temperature and electricity, into digital 1s and 0s, manipulate and cleanse them, and deliver them as the clearer, sharper and more precise signals that we rely on. Components like amplifiers, data converters, interface, clocks, timing and wireless connectivity ICs perform critical functions in a circuit. They are used in all cutting edge and daily electronics in markets such as – industrial and automotive. It has been identified that for every embedded processor in a customer's electronic system, 10 analogue components are typically required (depending on the system design and application).

In automobiles, digital processing take place for engine control and body control most. However, there are a number of sensors in the automotive environment, which have analogue signals and they require processing and signal conditioning. Power train designs in automotive are primarily analogue in nature. Body electronics have some critical interfaces and components that do analogue signal conditioning before being fed to main controller. Therefore analogue ICs still play a critical role in the automotive application.

Some additional areas, wherein analogue components are seen include, cabin lighting, tail lights, motor driver or other forms of illumination, through LEDs.

Tell us about major growth areas for the analogue IC market? Kindly elaborateAs mentioned above, some of the growth areas that we see are with regard to safety ICs include low power consumption semiconductors and analogue components for body electronics and driver infosystems.

What kind of opportunities TI sees in India for analogue chips, particularly in the automotive segment?Analogue ICs have great opportunity in India as the automotive industry – both four wheeler and two wheeler segments need analogue solutions. Specifically, in India we find opportunity in the two wheeler segment, wherein analogue IC are used to design electronics such as, cluster/speed display, CDI and Body control modules. Additionally, in the four wheeler market Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), infotainment, cabin lighting, advanced RADAR are some of the emerging trends that are developing in the automotive sector.

Some of the other technologies that have application of analogue chips include the immobilizer function. This function allows the ignition module to start the car only when the right key identity is transmitted. Furthermore, many high range and mid-range cars adopt, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), which requires power controller and sensor interface capabilities (like TPIC7218) allowing a car to have better control at high speed breaking, as it does not allow the wheels to lock and skid in the direction of motion.

Finally, for electronic power steering (EPS) Texas Instruments (TI) has identified this need and developed a state of art motor driver solutions to drive the bulky motors used in the EPS systems, the newest and feature rich member in the family is the DRV3201.

New products in automotive:Understanding the requirements of the automotive industry, TI has been developing semiconductor solutions and providing OEM with a wide range of products. All our products that are being developed currently, will be automotive qualified products that will complement the existing range.

To recap on some of the products that were developed in the recent months, the TPS65310A-Q1 device is a power management unit, meeting the requirements of digital signal processor (DSP) controlled automotive systems (for example, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). With its integration of commonly used features, the TPS65310A-Q1 device significantly reduces board space and system costs. Also, DRV3201 is a 3 phase Motor Driver IC for automotive safety applications like electronics power steering. The CDC913 clock synthesiser ICs plays a crucial function as part of infotainment and HPDA551-Q1 transceiver is also crucial in automotive applications.

Finally, the SafeTI design packages have been developed to help designers meet industry standard functional safety requirements while managing both systematic and random failures. Using SafeTI™ components makes it easier for customers to achieve applicable end-product safety certification and get to market quickly with their safety critical systems which are pervasive in our world today.
