Designing a voltage regulator GPB with SPI

Layouting Rules: Traces width is defined based on the conductor and current factors as shown in figure 3 [3]. It is the most preferred design rule to define the PCB trace area for a certain temperature rise. Bending of the curve during routing is important in order to reduce EMC effect. Figure 4 explains types of bending structures ranging from a bad bending profile to an excellent profile [4].

Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI):It is a synchronous serial interface where an 8bit byte data can be shifted in and out 1 bit at a time. It can be used to communicate with a serial peripheral device or with a different microcontroller that has an embedded SPI interface. Typically, SPI signals consist of master-in-slave-out (MISO), master-out-slave-in (MOSI), serial clock (SCLK) and slave select (SS) [5].

Communication between internal components in an FPGA-based design occasionally deploys SPI. Other applications of SPI are communication in sensors, flash memory provided that they are SRAM-based and EEPROM. As for real time clocks, the implementation of SPI was introduced in a wake up receiver (WUR) which consumes less power [6]. It is preferred to have serial bus systems due to the fact that it involves simpler wiring as compared to parallel bus.

Numerous slave SPI devices can be cascaded with a master SPI device which is known also as the microcontroller. Figure 5 shows an example of cascading multiple SPI devices whereas figure 6 exemplifies an embedded SPI microcontroller with individual chip select for various slave SPI devices.

SPI communication
SPI is used to activate relay matrix for each test parameter setup. A special dedicated circuit is required to drive the relays according to the test setup. MAX482x (figure 7) is a relay driver used in the GPB to control the relays on the motherboard.
