After months of speculation, Amazon.com Inc. confirmed that it has bought Liquavista NV, a Dutch subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 2006 as a spin-out from the Philips Research Labs, Liquavista was acquired by Samsung in 2011 for an undisclosed sum. Liquavista produces electrowetting displays for use in e-readers, mobile phones, media players and other mobile devices.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported that Samsung was seeking less than Rs.543.48 crore ($100 million) for the business.

Amazon is one of the leading e-reader companies offering a range of Kindle tablets. According to several media reports, the company is also its own smartphones and set-top box. If reports are to be believed, Amazon may use Liquavista's technology to bring full color e-ink Kindle tablets.
