The market for both tablet and smartphone applications processors posted extraordinary year-on-year (YoY) growth in 2012.

According to Strategy Analytics' "Tablet Apps Processor Market Share 2012: Chinese Tablet Chip Companies Capture 20% Share" report, the tablet applications processor market topped Rs.14,673.91 crore ($2.7 billion), a 83 per cent YoY growth. While the smartphone applications processor market showed a robust 60 per cent YoY growth in 2012 to reach Rs.70,108.70 crore ($12.9 billion), based on the research firm's "Handset Component Technologies service report, "Smartphone Apps Processor Market Share 2012: Apple, Qualcomm and Samsung Together Capture 70% Revenue Share" report.

Apple reigns in tablet space
Strategy Analytics noted that Apple continued its dominance in the tablet applications processor market with 48 per cent revenue share in 2012. Nvidia, Texas Instruments, Samsung, and Qualcomm made up the rest of the top-five vendors. Strategy Analytics identified that a handful of Chinese tablet chip vendors captured 20 per cent volume share between them.

According to Sravan Kundojjala, senior analyst, Strategy Analytics, "Nvidia led the non-iPad tablet market with 27 per cent revenue share in 2012. Nvidia scored high-profile design-wins such as the Google Nexus 7 and Microsoft Surface RT, which fuelled 83 per cent year-on-year growth in its tablet applications processor shipments in 2012. Strategy Analytics states that Nvidia is well-positioned to address the high-performance tablet market with its new Tegra 4 chip."

Stuart Robinson, director of the Strategy Analytics handset component technologies service, also noted "Strategy Analytics believes that Intel and Qualcomm missed the tablet boat in 2012. We estimate that Qualcomm and Intel together captured less than 5 per cent volume share in the tablet applications processor market in 2012. Strategy Analytics states that Intel and Qualcomm's tablet success hinges on Microsoft' Windows tablet operating system's take off."

Qualcomm still leads smartphone apps processor space
Qualcomm maintained its lead in the smartphone applications processor market with 43 per cent revenue share in 2012. Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors gained acceptance across multiple smartphone price tiers and helped Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung, MediaTek and Broadcom captured the top-five revenue share rankings in the smartphone applications processor market in 2012.
