Microsoft is reportedly selling its TV software unit to Ericsson. According to a Bloomberg report, the networking giant is looking to acquire Microsoft’s Mediaroom IP television business.

Microsoft’s IPTV business makes software for phone companies such as AT&T to provide television over the internet. IPTV technology powers the Internet to transmit multimedia content over telecom and cable networks.

If the report is to be believed then, the transaction between the two companies could be announced in the coming few weeks.

Through this deal, Ericsson wants to cater to phone companies that are competing with cable and satellite, and web-based media providers, Bloomberg reported.

On the other hand, Microsoft plans to focus on delivering TV through its Xbox games console. The Mediaroom IPTV platform is used by more than 40 leading operators.
