BlackBerry said its India managing director Sunil Dutt has resigned from the company. He has left his position with immediate effect.

Dutt is learnt to have quit some time ago, but had stayed back to preside over the launch of the BlackBerry Z10, the first handset running on its new Blackberry 10 platform, according to The Economic Times.

Dutt is reportedly leaving the Canadian phone maker to start his own venture.

In the interim, Rick Costanzo, executive vice president for global sales, will take over the leadership of the India management team as the smartphone maker starts the search for a new sales lead as soon as possible.

"India is an extremely important market for BlackBerry and our aim is to continue to build on our recent momentum with the launch of BlackBerry 10," the company’s spokesperson said.

Dutt, an industry veteran with 27 years of experience in the Indian mobile technology and telecom sector, was appointed in December 2011 to head BlackBerry’s India operations. He has also worked in senior positions for companies like Hewlett Packard India, Samsung India Electronics Ltd, Nokia India Pvt Ltd, Whirlpool India Ltd, Wipro Limited and Philips India.

Recently, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Hein spoke about the overwhelming response the company has received for its first BB10-powered Z10 smartphone in India. Listening to this, Dutt’s resignation was quite surprising.
