Smart circadian lighting tech supports wireless communication

Murata has developed a lighting control system that enables implementation of circadian lighting (lighting that has a positive effect on circadian rhythm) by using a wireless switch and lighting control gateway unit.

Murata's "Smart Hospital Lighting System" for next-generation hospitals leverages wireless communication technology, and is currently undergoing field tests.

The lighting control gateway unit is equipped with three wireless communication modules which support the ZigBee, EnOcean, and Wi-Fi wireless data transmission technologies The ZigBee module is used for lighting control whereas the EnOcean module is used for receiving signals from the battery-less wireless switch. Furthermore, a user can access a Web server installed in the lighting control gateway unit via the Wi-Fi module to perform brightness adjustment and colour temperature adjustment settings and store a lighting schedule without installing any dedicated software. In order to develop the lighting fixture that supports wireless communications, the users adopted Murata's power modules for LED lighting that can be directly connected to ZigBee module. Mass production of the lighting control gateway unit is scheduled to start by the end of this year (2013).

Adjustment of brightness and colour temperature that match the circadian rhythm normally requires dedicated wiring for lighting control and configuration of system by dedicated software. As a result, construction required long lead time and made it difficult to install. To resolve these issues, Murata has expanded the function of the lighting control gateway unit and developed a system that can perform brightness adjustment and colour temperature adjustment by means of wireless communications. This system makes it possible to control the lighting wirelessly with greater flexibility and also simplifies the system installation on the software side.
