Tensilica Inc. unveils the HiFi Mini DSP core that supports "always listening voice trigger" and "speech command" modes. The DSP is designed for hands-free use in the smallest area and lowest power in smartphones, tablets, appliances, and automotive applications.

The DSP core features two innovations. One, it uses compact 40bit encoding to improve code size; and two, it uses 16bit instructions that are optimised for voice and audio codecs. The result is a post-route core that's only 0.039mm2 in 28nm HPL.

The company is collaborating with software partners such as Sensory to develop voice-activation, speech command recognition, voice pre-processing and noise reduction products optimised on the DSP core.

The HiFi Mini DSP IP core is scheduled for release in March 2013.
