Li-ion battery charger offers I2C interface for configurability

ZMD AG launches the ZSPM4551 DC/DC synchronous switching Li-ion battery charger.

The charger is configurable for termination voltage, charge current and additional variables to allow optimum charging conditions for a wide range of Li-ion batteries. Its switching frequency is at 1MHz so smaller filter components can be used, thus, board space and system costs are reduced.

It has an integrated I2C interface with EEPROM registers which enables the user to set application-specific temperature-compensated termination voltages and control charging currents. It can regulate up to 1.5A continuous drive current.

The ZSPM4551 features integrated power switches, internal compensation and fault protection. It offers Li-ion-specific protection for over-current, over-temperature, battery (VBAT) over-voltage and charging timeout. It includes supervisory reporting through the NFLT (inverted fault) open-drain output for interfacing with other components in the system.

It claims up to 92 per cent efficiency with typical loads and ultra-low power consumption. When the regulator is disabled, the device typically draws 10µA quiescent current.

Other features of the charger include input supply under-voltage lockout; full protection for over-current and over-temperature; and charge status indication.

The ZSPM4551 DC/DC synchronous switching Li-ion battery charger operates from -40°C to 125°C and comes in a 4mm x 4mm 16-L PQFN package. It is priced at Rs.87.30 ($1.65) for 1,000-unit orders
