Proximity sensor touts IR, ADC, signal processing

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. debuts the 16bit VCNL3020 proximity sensor. The highly-integrated device incorporates an IR emitter, photo-pin-diode, signal processing IC, and a 16bit ADC in a surface-mount package measuring 4.85mm x 2.35mm x 0.83mm.

The sensor features an I�C bus communication interface, an interrupt function and an integrated external emitter driver to extend the sensor's range.

The sensor's 16bit effective resolution for proximity detection ensures cross talk immunity, removing the need for a mechanical barrier between the emitter and detector. Its LED drive current is programmable from 10mA to 200mA, in 10mA increments. It can communicate up to a distances of 200mm, and to more than a metre when the integrated emitter driver is used to drive external emitters. It also achieves ambient light immunity by modulating the emitter signal.

An interrupt function enables the sensor to work independently until a programmable threshold value occurs, and then it wakes up the microcontroller. This helps customers reduce their software effort and lower power consumption by limiting polling communication traffic between the sensor and MCU.

The sensor is suited for touchscreen locking for smartphones, touch phones, PDAs, GPS units, and digital cameras; and as an optical switch for computing and industrial devices and displays.

Other features include standby current consumption of 1.5µA, a supply voltage range of 2.5V to 3.6V and I�C bus voltage range from 1.7V to 5V. The RoHS-compliant sensor operates over a temperature range of -25°C to + 85°C.

Samples of the 16bit VCNL3020 proximity sensor are available now. Production quantities will be available in March 2013, with a lead time of eight weeks for large orders.
