16Kbit FRAM touts ultra-low power in SON-8 package

Fujitsu Semiconductor America (FSA) unveils the MB85RC16, a 16Kbit Ferroelectric RAM packaged in a SON-8 package that includes an I2C interface and offers standby current as low as 0.1µA.


Designed for miniaturized products, the device is suited for space-constrained medical wearable equipment and portable measurement products that require real-time data logging. Compared with the older SOP-8 package, the new SON-8 package reduces the mounting space by up to 80 per cent.

Also, compared with standard EEPROM, the current consumption during writing can be reduced by as much as 98 per cent.

The company claims the FRAM has higher performance, greater speed, higher endurance and lower power consumption than conventional non-volatile memories.

The MB85RC16 16Kbit FRAM comes in a 3mm x 2mm SON-8 package. Samples are available now.
