DC/DC converter tips 70% efficiency at 100µA

Texas Instruments Inc. launches the TPS62175 synchronous, step-down DC/DC converter. The 28V, 500mA device operates at less than 5µA during sleep mode and is said to maintain efficiency during light load operation while supporting ultra-low-power MCUs in 12V, 15V and 24V applications. These include industrial sensors, smart meters, medical, and wireless power transmission designs.

The regulator achieves greater than 70 per cent efficiency at 100µA, and operates with less than 5µA quiescent current in sleep mode and 20µA typically in regular mode. It supports MCU systems with extreme standby power requirements and output voltage accuracy, such as TI's Stellaris ARM Cortex-M4F series of MCUs.

It uses the company's patented DCS-Control regulation topology, combining hysteretic and voltage-mode control in a single device for AC line and transient load regulation. DCS-Control also provides DC accuracy through a voltage feedback loop, and creates a seamless transition between high- and light-load (power save) operation.

The TPS62175 DC/DC converter is packaged in a 10-pin, 2mm x 3mm WSON package priced at Rs.51.63 ($0.95) in 1,000-unit quantities. Designers can order the TPS62175EVM-098 evaluation module to test the device's operation and functionality when converting from 4.75V to 28V to a regulated 3.3V output voltage.
