Freescale Semiconductor introduces the 12-axis Xtrinsic sensor hub platform, a MEMS-based platform that has been certified by Microsoft Corp. as meeting its requirements for Windows 8 OS-based portable devices.

The platform comprises hardware and software components that allow designers to quickly and easily develop smarter, more accurate portable devices. These include a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis magnetometer, precision altimeter, pressure and temperature sensor, an analogue ambient light sensor and selection of compatible gyroscopes.

Freescale's ColdFire+ MCF51JU128VHS MCU acts as the sensor hub, providing sensor data collection, computational capability and host interface functionality to provide sensor fusion aligned to Windows 8 requirements.

The platform leverages the individual strengths of each sensor to synthesise environmental inputs, such as motion, location and ambient light, into more accurate outputs, resulting in an enhanced user experience with a more reliable and sensitive device. These sensor fusion tasks are offloaded from the host processor to the Freescale sensor hub, thus enabling more customisable and efficient solutions that support longer device battery life.

The solution has been integrated into Windows 8 OS-based ultra books and hybrid PCs from major manufacturers for release later in Q4 12.

Freescale is offering the RDFXWIN8USB board that contains an Xtrinsic MMA8451Q accelerometer, Xtrinsic FXMS3110CDR1 magnetometer, Xtrinsic MPL3115A2 precision altimeter, along with other sensors and a dedicated MCF51JU128VHS MCU, complemented with a fully featured, Windows 8-aligned software library for comprehensive sensor fusion for Rs.10,815.22 ($199).
