Telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent said it plans to cut nearly 5,490 jobs globally as part of a cost-cutting plan launched in July.

The struggling company said it aims to save Rs.8,741.26 crore (1.25 billion euros or $1.64 billion) by the end of 2013.

As part of the plan, Alcatel-Lucent said the job cuts will affect 3,300 jobs in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, 1,200 in the United States, and 1,000 in Asia Pacific. The company employs 76,000 people worldwide.

The job cuts will mainly affect support functions such as sales and HR; and will not affect the 26,000 staff working on research and development worldwide.

The company is also closing down the headquarters of its French unit now at Velizy, near Paris, and move 2,400 staff to another office in Villarceaux.
