Texas Instruments Inc. unveils the Sitara AM335x ARM Cortex-A8 Starter Kit for developing smart appliances, industrial and networking applications and other connected devices requiring a touch screen interface.

The low-cost development platform is based on the Sitara AM3358 ARM Cortex-A8 processor. It has a 4.3inch LCD display that supports rotation and tilt capabilities via an on-board accelerometer, plus multiple communication options including dual Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Offering speeds up to 720MHz, the development kit speeds designs with a ready-for-production hardware and software platform. It enables developers to quickly evaluate the features of the processor and accompanying TI components, taking the guess work out of hardware design. Thus, designers can focus on product differentiation such as advanced graphics and connectivity when creating connected thermostats, security panels, wireless hard disc drives and portable hot spots.

The starter kit is scalable with pin for pin options for graphics and industrial communications based on AM335x ARM Cortex-A8 processors at up to 720MHz. It comes with 2Gb DDR3 memory and 2Gb Ethernet ports via integrated 2-port switch on the AM335x ARM Cortex-A8 processor. Its 5.1inch x 2.6inch touchscreen LCD display supports rotation and tilt capabilities via the on-board accelerometer. For connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) with Wi-Fi Direct support and Bluetooth v 4.0 including Bluetooth low energy connectivity via on-board WL1271 Murata module with integrated antenna. Also, an XDS100 JTAG emulator functionality on board via USB enables debug at no extra cost. The kit also offers additional peripherals such as USB, USB-UART, navigation buttons, user LEDs, audio out and more.

Software, OS compatibility
The starter kit leverages TI's suite of software solutions, including Sitara StarterWare software. It is compatible with the Android OS and Linux OS distributions from TI, delivering complete support for the latest software solutions and cutting-edge customer applications using Android 4.0 and Linux 3.x. Compatible solutions and RTOS will also be available from third parties to enable additional product customisation and further simplify development.

The AM335x Starter Kit (TMDSSK3358) is available, priced at Rs.11,055.56 ($199).
