Ref design eases 18W A19 LED driver design

Power Integrations introduces the DER-323 reference design for creating 18W, 88 per cent-efficient, non-isolated A19 LED drivers based on the company's LinkSwitch-PL LNK460VG low-profile IC. The reference design creates a replacement for a 100W incandescent bulb.

The design is optimised for 90VAC to 135VAC operation. The circuit needs only a simple single-sided board and 25 components, with no potting needed and a low-cost inductor to replace the usual transformer.

The DER-323 uses a simple buck-boost converter topology that fits easily inside the A19 bulb. The design is EN61000-3-2(C) compliant and has a power factor >0.98, satisfying commercial and consumer compliance requirements.

Because the LNK460VG combines PFC and CC converter functions in a single-stage topology, no electrolytic bulk capacitor is required, resulting in a very long operational life.
