The point-to-point microwave transmission equipment market rebounded from a trough in the first quarter of the year when the market revenues fell significantly below Rs.5,464.48 crore ($1 billion). In 2Q 2012, the point-to-point microwave market rose 21 per cent sequentially to Rs.6,010.93 crore ($1.1 billion), according to market research firm, Dell'Oro Group.

"With the exception of Europe, microwave sales picked up across all the geographic regions," said Jimmy Yu, Vice President of Microwave Transmission research at Dell'Oro Group. "This broad increase across the globe including North America is what helped the microwave market improve this quarter. The only area of disappointment was the European region, which continued to stall from a peak level it reached a year ago," Yu added.

The report found that the most popular equipment configuration continued to be split-mount with approximately 90 per cent of shipments. Full outdoor unit configuration is favoured by vertical markets rather than mobile backhaul and, therefore, accounted for less than 5 per cent of microwave shipments. However, as small cell deployments rise, requirements for low power and small footprint will drive demand for full outdoor units, stated the report. The remainder of shipments was full indoor unit configuration, which are used mainly for long haul transmission, the report added.
