To address security concerns, Government has decided to set up a laboratory to test imported telecommunication equipment. Currently, majority of telecom equipment is imported which raises security risks of possible spyware and malware attacks.

"The government is setting up a laboratory to test imported telecommunication equipment for possible spyware and malware besides stepping up verification of phone subscribers to ward off cyber and terror attacks," Telecom Commission member (technology) J.K. Roy said during a conference organised by ASSOCHAM.

The new lab, to be functional by next year, will scan telecom equipment and networks to prevent harmful voice, video and data traffic.

"This will help in evolving a robust cyber security governance framework as critical infrastructures like telecom, banking and financial institutions, besides energy production and transmission become increasingly dependent on computer systems and networks."

Internet service providers are constantly being monitored. However, with 90 crore telecom subscribers, it is a gigantic task to secure telecom networks.
