Today, Bangalore is going to witness the inauguration of the India SystemC User's Group (ISCUG) 2012 conference. The two-day conference aims to accelerate the adoption of SystemC as the open source standard for Electronics System Level (ESL) designs.

Indian SystemC Users Group chair Umesh Sisodia, also a CEO at Circuitsutra Technologies, spoke to EE Times India's Arti Singh about ISCUG 2012—a first-of-its-kind event aimed at SystemC professionals of the country.

On ISCUG 2012, Sisodio says, "SystemC usage in India is increasing. Most of the SoC companies are already evaluating or using SystemC in their flow. We expect that event will serve the purpose of providing a platform for sharing the best practices about SystemC and will help to accellerate the adoption of SystemC."

One of the challenges in SystemC adoption is the lack of expertise available in the industry. It requires a very unique skill set which is a combination of software development (C, C++, OOPS) and the hardware design (SoC design, simulation, synthesis...). In ISCUG we have several presentations / sessions that will help the beginers to get started with SystemC, he adds.

Sisodia: ESL is going to become the necessary component of semiconductor ecosystem.

ISCUG 2012—a must-attend conference for those in semiconductor industry...

SystemC is becoming a standard language for Electronics System Level (ESL) design. Different people define ESL in different ways, as it is a collection of several concepts. ESL can be summarised as following two points:

- Design and verification methodologies for complete system (Hardware + Software)

- Raising the abstraction level (Transistor -> Gates -> RTL -> ESL)

"I think no one in the industry have any doubts that ESL is going to become the necessary component of semiconductor ecosystem."

ISCUG in future...

Sisodia feels, "To make the event sustainable we need to ensure that it is not dependent on specific individual or company. It has to be driven by SystemC community. This year we have tried to involve several major players in the organising committee, and we got overwhelming support. Going forward we will define a more formal structure for the event."

The organising committee includes companies such as Texas Instruments, Intel, Freescale, STMicroelectronics, NXP, Broadcom, Coverify, and Vienna University of Technology.

ISCUG 2012 is designed on the pattern of similar events happening worldwide including North America (NASCUG), Europe (ESCUG) and Japan (SystemC Day Japan). There will be active discussion about next-generation design and verification methodologies for semiconductors and embedded software.

The event is affiliated with Accellera Systems Initiative, OCP-IP, IEEE and ISA.
