Vibrating magnetic tattoos may soon alert mobile phone users to incoming calls and text messages, thanks to Nokia, The Finnish handset maker has filed a patent application for a ferromagnetic material that can be stamped, sprayed or tattooed onto a mobile phone users' skin and then can paired with the mobile device.

"The material vibrates in a multitude of ways when a message, phone call, low battery indication or several other alerts are received by the tattoo from a Nokia phone," the company said.

Different signals could be assigned for different functions.

Nokia is taking phone notifications to an extreme with a new patent, tattoos that react with your phone using haptics, the same vibratory interaction that you experience when typing on a touchscreen keyboard. Haptic technology is a tactile feedback technology that takes advantage of a user's sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, and/or motions to the user. Tactile feedback between a user and an electronic device may be provided by mechanical vibrations and/or pulses originating from all or part of an entire electronic device. Tactile feedback may be provided for example on a display.

"Initially, the patent explains that users would wear the material on clothing, stick-on patches, etc. However, it goes on to apply the functionality to magnetic inks, which can then be embedded into the skin in the form of tattoos. That process gets a little more involved, first demagnetizing the ink, applying the tattoo, then magnetizing it once again."

"The magnetic mark can however remain invisible, making it more appealing to people who don't want to visibly mark their body with a tattoo."

"The tattoo also acts as a form of identity...means users would no longer need to type a password into their phone."
