Intel has unveiled a new media processor called the Intel Atom CE5300 for set-top boxes and media gateways. The processor, previously codenamed Berryville, is intended to be the brains in a set-top box that seamlessly combines the Internet with TV.

The chip boasts 3D user interface and console-level graphics for gaming, and also allows video conferencing with friends and family. Intel announced this processor at the IPTV World Forum in London.

Intel and service providers are all working to bring you an easy-to-use interface, 3D graphics capabilities, improved search, and of course, downloadable apps and games for your various digital TVs, said Intel.

In addition, the Atom CE5300 processor will allow service providers to offer new services like gaming, home security, IT/help desk, and home automation. The processor will also find its way into residential/video gateways that typically include a modem, VoIP processor, router, tuner, and applications processor.

The Intel Atom CE5300 processor is Intels 4th-generation SoC and the first 32nm part for this market segment that features a dual Intel Atom core with support for hyperthreading and virtualization, an advanced 3D/2D graphics engine, integrated power management, and an H.264 B-picture hardware encoder.
