The Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences (Mönchengladbach, Germany) has launched the HARPOON research project that aims at improving OLED's energy efficiency and optimising its production.

Researchers of the project, which is coordinated by Philips Technologie GmbH, hope to find ways for cost-effective mass production of efficient OLEDs for lighting applications.

In the scope of the project, the scientists explore numeric flow simulation methods and develop algorithms to calculate layered flow processes in the transition area between fine vacuum and high vacuum. This basic research is conducted at the Institute for model building and high-performance computing which is specialised in developing mathematical models and simulating technological processes.

In order to resolve this challenge, the researchers are connecting a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package to an open source code program. CFD is well established as a method of fluid mechanics aiming at resolving any given fluid mechanical problem by means of numerical methods. In order to conduct these complex computations within an appropriate time frame, the university of applied science has purchased a new high-performance parallel computing cluster with 128 CPUs. The project is funded in part by the state of Northrhine Westphalia. First results will be available within two years.
