Google acquires a new batch of over 200 IBM patents covering several technologies including those for email management, e-commerce, mobile Web page display, server backup, instant messaging, tuning and recovery, advertising, database tuning and online calendaring.

This comes at a time when smartphone players are constantly in court suing each other over patents and innovations.

Ever since the fight for smartphone market dominance has turned into a series of patent infringement lawsuits, Google has been strengthening its patent portfolio.

Just last year, Google bought 2,000 patents from IBM. The first 1,000 patents were acquired in July and the rest were acquired in September.

The company has also acquired Motorola Mobility, who has over 17,000 issued patents as well as 7,500 pending patents.

"Motorola Mobility's total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies," said Larry Page, Google co-founder and CEO, when the acquisition was announced. "Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers."

Google officials have already said that acquiring patents bolsters the company's ability to defend itself against patent infringement or intellectual property lawsuits.
