30nm DDR3 mobile RAM lowers power use by 25%

Elpida Memory Inc. presents 4Gb DDR3 Mobile RAM (LPDDR3) in 30nm process technology that touts a high-speed data transfer rate of 1600Mbit/s at an operating voltage of 1.2V.

Elpida's LPDDR3 touts a high-speed data transfer rate of 1600Mbit/s.

The LPDDR3 achieves a data transfer rate twice as fast as DDR2 Mobile RAM (LPDDR2) that is the current leading DRAM preference for mobile devices, according to Elpida. Based on a per pin speed of 1600Mbit/s, a single LPDDR3 device has a data transfer rate of 6.4GB/s or 12.8GB/s in high-end mobile devices using a two-chip configuration. When compared with LPDDR2 on a same-speed basis, LPDDR3 consumes roughly 25 per cent less power, enabling it to extend the operating time of such mobile devices as smartphones and tablets. In addition, the device operates from -30°C to 85°C.

Sample shipments of the new LPDDR3 will begin towards the end of the year. Depending on customer demand, volume production is expected to start late next year. Also, two- and four-layer stacking configurations will enable high-density 8Gb and 16Gb chips to be added the line-up of LPDDR3 products.
