Texas Instruments is organising 'TI MCU Design Contest 2011' – a contest for design engineers across India. The contest will enable the participants to win prizes worth Rs.17.94 lakh ($40000); and will also provide opportunities for showcasing the design to potential investors.

Through this contest, TI aims to help popularise electronic system design among companies, design houses, engineers in individual capacity and hobbyists in India. The three phased contest involves contestants developing designs incorporating TI controllers (MSP430/ Stellaris/ C2000/ Hercules). "Along with TI microcontrollers, participants are encouraged to leverage the wide portfolio of TI products in this project."

"Texas Instruments believes technological innovation is the propeller of future economic and social success," said Shailesh Thakurdesai, business development manager, microcontrollers, TI. "With Texas Instruments MCU Design Contest 2011, we offer design engineers an environment where their talent can be nurtured and an ecosystem in which novelty can thrive."

The qualifiers of the first phase will be given a period of three months to develop their projects for the grand finale. During the project development stage, qualifiers will have access to support from TI experts. The top ten projects will be felicitated by TI with awards. The best projects will be felicitated with cash prizes including a cash prize of Rs.6.73 lakh ($15000 )for the best design, followed by Rs.2.24 lakh ($5000 )for the first runner up and Rs.1.35 lakh ($3000 )for the second runner-up. Along with a wide range of prizes, the selected projects also stand a chance to be showcased in presence of potential investors and commercialise the product. "Attractive prizes will be given to participants at every level competition," TI said.

The contest takes place in three phases:

Phase I: Starting December 1, participants across India are invited to submit a 3–4 page proposal with block diagrams and schematics elaborating their project. The entries for the contest should be submitted by January 31, 2012 at www.timcucontest.com

Phase II: Among the received proposals, top 50 contestants will be shortlisted by a panel of jury. Each entry will be judged on basis of innovation, technical merit, originality, usefulness, cost-effectiveness and design optimisation by an independent panel of judges. The shortlisted contestants of Phase I will be provided with TI MCU toolkits to develop their prototypes. Once completed, the developed prototypes can be submitted either at local TI office or be presented though a video by May 5, 2012.

Phase III: From the 50 entries, the top 10 projects will compete amongst themselves at the national finals of the competition. The top 10 contestants will also get an opportunity to display their work during the grand finale in May 2012.
