eNodeB, EPC solutions enhance performance

Cavium Networks and Aricent collaborate on 4G/LTE Radio Access and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) solutions providing performance-enhanced and highly-scalable EPC Frameworks and LTE eNodeB base station protocol software stacks for Cavium's Octeon II Multicore and the Octeon Fusion base station-on-a-chip processor families.

This joint effort claims to deliver significant technology synergies, offering LTE equipment manufacturers a high-performance, high-capacity solution for their eNodeB and EPC platforms. At the same time, the partnership simultaneously accelerates time to market, and reduces interoperability risk and development cost.

Aricent's LTE EPC frameworks, capable of supporting small to large-scale subscriber deployments, comprise of pre-integrated and pre-optimised Mobility Management Entity (MME), Serving Gateway, Packet DataNetwork (PDN) Gateway, Home Subscriber Server (HSS) and Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) components. Aricent 3GPP Release 9/10 standards compliant EPC frameworks integrate all EPC functions (control, data and management) into a seamless package, accelerating and simplifying development of highly scalable, carrier-class EPC solutions across small (niche/private/public-safety networks) to large (macro/telco) deployments. Aricent's LTE EPC framework is said to be pre-optimised for Cavium OCTEON Processors.

Aricent's 3GPP compliant LTE eNodeB framework offering integrates complete Layer 2 and Layer 3+ functionality in a software package that serves as a robust reference platform on OCTEON Fusion on which to develop complete LTE eNodeB solutions. The framework also exposes clear interfaces for equipment manufacturers to incorporate innovative features in order to differentiate their products in a highly competitive marketplace.

According to the Cavium, the Octeon Fusion is one of the industry's most powerful multi-core base station-on-a-chip family integrating up to six MIPS64 cores with 8 LTE/3G base band DSP cores enabling macro-class features for small cell base stations. The Octeon Fusion processor family consists of two product lines, CNF71xx capable of supporting up to 200+ users processors, and CNF72xx capable of supporting over 300 users on 20MHz carriers.
