Linear Technology Corp. introduces the LTM8052, a 36V input constant frequency step-down µModule regulator with an adjustable output current limit of up to 5A allowing system designers to set the maximum power delivered to a load.

The LTM8052 converts an input voltage between 6V to 36V to an adjustable output voltage between 1.2V to 24V. In a 12V input to 2.5V output application, the device reaches a peak operating efficiency of 88 per cent at 2A, according to Linear.

The flexible current limit minimises the output rating of the upstream AC/DC or DC/DC power supply. The LTM8052 is also capable of sourcing or sinking current while regulating an adjustable output voltage. For simple noise filtering, the regulator works at a constant frequency throughout the entire output current range. Applications include industrial, medical imaging and communications point of load, charge balancing and Peltier thermoelectric module drivers.

36VIN, ±5A Source/Sink Step-Down µModule Regulator with Adjustable Current Limit

The LTM8052's 10 per cent accurate current limit is an improvement over traditional

step-down regulators whose current limit can be 40 to 50 per cent greater than the actual output current, said Linear Tech. With the device, a lower power and less costly upstream power supply can be installed. Otherwise, a greater output power rating to prevent a collapse of the voltage rail under an over-current or short-circuit condition is required.

The current limit may be compensated for temperature using a thermistor for improved thermal management. When sinking current, the µModule regulator recovers energy, transferring it to the input rail rather than dissipating it as heat in conventional methods. For noise-sensitive applications, the LTM8052 can be synchronised to an external clock frequency in the range of 100kHz to 1MHz. Additional features include externally adjustable soft start, adjustable switching frequency and thermal shutdown.

The LTM8052 is packaged in a thermally efficient 11.25x15x2.82mm LGA package. The two temperature grades, E and I for the -40°C to 125°C temperature range, are available for immediate delivery. Pricing starts at Rs.590.58 ($13.17) each for 1,000-piece quantities.
