Infonetics Research Inc. says that the cumulative total of about Rs.11.21 lakh crore ($250 billion) will be spent on mobile infrastructure from 2011 to 2015.

Infonetics Research finds that the market for LTE infrastructure has surpassed WiMax for the first time. During 2Q11, 2G, 3G and 4G infrastructure spending increased 25.2 per cent y-o-y.

In the 4G segment, the LTE equipment market was about Rs.26.91 lakh crore ($600 million) in 2Q11, while the equivalent WiMax market was estimated at Rs.22.42 lakh crore ($500 million), the firm said. The two markets together are set to show CAGR of 46 per cent until 2015.

"Although LTE and 4G continue to make the headlines, GSM was definitely the 2Q11 reality, with massive capacity upgrades in China and India. In addition, 2G and 3G network modernisation with multi-standard base transceiver stations continues to be strong and will remain the main theme throughout 2H11," stated Stephane Teral, principal analyst for mobile infrastructure at Infonetics.
